Indiana Jones - Movie Poster Analysis
The poster is advertising the already released adventure science fiction movie,
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of The Crystal Skull (released in 2008). This movie was created by George Lucas and was directed by Steven Spielberg. It is the fourth film in the Indiana Jones collection. It was the second highest grossing film of 2008. It grossed $786,636,033. I will be describing the movie poster, and including subjects such as; props, costume, setting, anchorage, lighting, character and NVC (non verbal communication) in the following paragraphs. I will be Analyzing this Poster using Misce-on-scene Character: The actor playing the part of Indiana Jones is named Harrison Ford. Indiana Jones is the Hero of the movie. He is the character in almost every scene of the movie, the focus and the hero – as it states in the title, ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’. Indiana Jones determines what happens in the movie, since he is the main focus. Props In the poster, Indiana Jones is holding a whip & whip represents power and slavery. Before Racial Equality was intorduced The masters used to whip the coloured people if they disobeyed them or to scare them into doing forced labour work. Holding a whip is also for self defence. Indiana Jones is an adventurer so he needs something to protect him from getting harmed. Costume Indiana Jones is wearing a shirt and trousers. This seems like a distressed work look. Since he is an archaeologist, this makes the movie more believable. This shows that he is quite comfortable in his work clothes. Moreover, his clothes symbolise sophistication and power – For him to wear work clothes shows he is quite confident with himself. His hat tells the audience that he is going on a adventure/journey. Hats are also seen to hide ones identity, so if he was to be seen by an enemy, he can easily hide his face beneath the hat. Setting The poster shows Indiana Jones standing in a Cave, Your first few thoughts of the word ‘cave’ would be, cold, wet, damp and dark. This also gives you the impression that the movie will be set for most of the time. Furthermore, the poster shows that the cave is hot, fiery and bright. Anchorage The font of the movie title ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ automatically makes you pressume that this is an adventurous film. The colour of the font gives you a sense of Jeopardy since it almost looks like fire (yellow and orange coloured font). The font looks old because the movie series started in 1984. So, the creators continued using the font because they didn’t want to change the whole image of the film. NVC Indiana Jones’ body language seems quite firm and hard, He seems like he is almost flexing to show off his body, The way he's standing gives you an idea that he is confident, His facial expression looks serious, This gives off the impression that he is a serious person, But, you can see a smirk on his face, which could also mean that he is a humble person who has a sense of humour, His hand gestures signify the fact that he is secretive, that he doesn’t want to show his emotions, His fist shows power, and that he likes to be in charge. |
